Music in the Somerset Hills is proud to announce that bass vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Ivan Dean Denissov has been named the recipient of the 2026 MISH Young Musicians Scholarship.

This annual $5,000 award recognizes exceptional high school musicians across New Jersey who demonstrate outstanding artistic achievement, strong potential for advanced study, and a clear commitment to using music in service of others.

Selected from a competitive pool of more than 20 applicants, Ivan distinguished himself through a rare combination of technical command, musical sensitivity, and deeply purposeful artistry. Applications were evaluated by a panel of professional musicians, with particular attention to intonation, tone, phrasing, expressivity, preparation, and readiness for conservatory-level work. Ivan’s submission stood out not only for its musical excellence, but for the clarity and sincerity of his artistic voice.

A 17-year-old bass vocalist from Moorestown, NJ, Ivan is currently a voice major in the Juilliard Pre-College Division and a graduate of Moorestown High School, where he served as both student conductor and bass section leader. He is ranked the top Bass II singer in the New Jersey All-State Choir and has performed extensively in regional choral and jazz ensembles. His repertoire spans a wide range of styles, from Bach and Monteverdi to Brahms, Fauré, and Vaughan Williams, as well as an extensive catalog of jazz standards.

In addition to his vocal work, Ivan is an accomplished actor, conductor, and instrumentalist, performing on piano, guitar, bass, and trombone. His teachers consistently note his intellectual curiosity, stylistic versatility, and leadership, as well as a genuine joy in music-making that resonates with both collaborators and audiences.

Central to Ivan’s artistry is a strong sense of purpose. In his scholarship essay, he recounts a performance at a nursing home where a resident who “never leaves his room” began to dance with joy during a Sinatra-style set. That moment, and the resident’s words—“You have a gift. Don’t ever stop making music”—affirmed Ivan’s belief that music’s highest purpose is “to bring the most amount of joy to as many people as I can,” offering connection, comfort, and inspiration in any setting.

“Ivan embodies the values at the heart of this scholarship,” said Stephen Sands, Artistic Director of Music in the Somerset Hills. “He not only sings beautifully; he performs with a clear intention to connect, to uplift, and to serve others through music. We are thrilled to support him as he continues his musical journey.”

This fall, Ivan will begin his undergraduate studies in voice at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. He plans to pursue graduate study and ultimately a career as a conservatory-level educator, mentoring future generations of musicians to be both artistically excellent and deeply compassionate.

The MISH Young Musicians Scholarship reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting emerging artists and investing in the future of music. By recognizing and nurturing young musicians like Ivan, MISH continues to extend its mission beyond the stage, helping to cultivate artists who will enrich their communities through meaningful and impactful musical experiences.
