Monteverdi Vespers

  • St. Mary's Abbey 230 Old Mendham Road Morristown, New Jersey, 07960 United States (map)

Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, the 1610 Vespers, stands as one of the monuments of sacred music, uniting soloists, multiple choirs, and colorful instruments in a work of remarkable scale and variety. Across thirteen movements, Monteverdi builds psalms, motets, a sonata, and the Magnificat on Gregorian chant, then animates them with new operatic expressiveness, echo effects, and virtuoso writing that helped usher in the baroque style. Under Anne Matlack’s direction, the Somerset Hills Chorus joins Harmonium, The Sebastians, and a stellar roster of soloists to explore music that moves effortlessly from whispered prayer to jubilant celebration.
